TYPES OF HEALTH INSURANCE

If you are in the market for health insurance, you have a few choices for types of plans. Most health plans are organized by four levels of care - silver, bronze, gold and platinum. However, there are four major categories that these plans can fall under.

Medicare Part A: Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A provides in-patient hospital insurance, which includes availing of a semi-private room, medical tests and hospital food. The program coverage is usually for a period of 90 days where the first 60 days of stay are paid by Medicare and the remaining 30 days are subject to co-payment. Medicare Part A applies only when the physician anticipates patient admission for more than 2 midnights. If not, Medicare Part A will not apply.

Medicare Part B: Medical Insurance

Outpatient individuals can use Medicare Part B for coverage. This program provides assistance in payment of medical services and needed medications not covered by Medicare Part A. Medicare usually covers 80% of the expenses under services for Part B Medicare Insurance while the patient pays for the remaining 20%. Part B Medicare coverage is optional and the worker may choose the group health insurance provided by the employer for out-patient treatments.

Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans is one of the results of the passage of Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. In this program, beneficiaries enjoy the benefits under the original Medicare plan and are given additional benefits of getting out of pocket limit annually. Plan C beneficiaries are usually required to pay additional dues monthly and are required to undergo treatment with selected health practitioners.

Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Plans

Another result of the passing of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 is Part D of the Medicare program involving Prescription Drugs. To avail of the plan, a beneficiary must enroll separately with a prescription drug plan or include prescription drug coverage in his Medicare Advantage Plan.
